Ms Catherine Reid, Barrister,
Catherine is a specialist in New Zealand’s foreign investment regime, including the Overseas Investment Act 2005 and the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) consent process. Catherine developed her expertise at the OIO where she held senior roles. In 2015 Catherine returned to private practice and is now assisting investors in obtaining OIO approvals. Prior to joining the OIO in 2011, Catherine was a senior solicitor at a national commercial law firm.
Ms. Christina Lefever, Principal,
Christina is the principal at Lefever Law, a commercial law firm specializing in overseas investment advice and applications. Her experience with the Overseas investment Act consent process includes involvement in over 50 Overseas Investment Office (OIO) applications, including a significant number of applications relating to the agricultural sector (including farming, forestry and horticulture), and OIO applications under the new legislative tests introduced in 2018, including applications under the new streamlined forestry tests, and applications for residential land and property development exemption certificates. She is also a member of the OIO’s Legal Reference Group. Along with a comprehensive knowledge of the Overseas Investment Act and Regulations, Christina understands the practicalities associated with the application process (including applications for variations and exemptions) and the key issues that clients face.
Ms. Hannah Lee, Senior Associate, Buddle Findlay
Hannah in a senior associate in Buddle Findlay's public law team, specialising in overseas investment. Hannah's experience includes providing overseas investment advice and assisting with all elements of applications under the Overseas Investment Act. Hannah has been involved in advising on the overseas investment aspects of acquisitions by Coca-Cola, Nestlé, a limited partnership between Lightsource bp and Contact Energy (for solar farming), and Drylandcarbon (carbon farming). Having worked on a number of applications, including through changes to the Act in 2018 and 2020-2021, Hannah is well-versed in the practicalities of filing applications and notifications with the Overseas Investment Office. Hannah has also previously been seconded to The Treasury to work on changes to the Overseas Investment Act.
Tessa Baker, Partner, Chapman Tripp
Tessa specialises in commercial property law. She advises both domestic and international clients on a range of property acquisition, management and disposal activities. She is also an expert in New Zealand’s overseas investment regime and has previously been a member of the Overseas Investment Offices’ legal reference group. Tessa has experience in land issues for infrastructure project developments, including leases, licences and easements.
