Sue Barker, Director, Sue Barker Charities Law
Sue Barker is the director of Sue Barker Charities Law, a boutique law firm based in Wellington, specialising in charities law and public tax law. Since its founding in 2012, the firm has won a number of awards, including Boutique Law Firm of the Year at the New Zealand Law Awards. Sue is recognised by the International Charity Law Network as a Charity Law Scholar. Sue is also a director of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, and a co-author of the text The Law and Practice of Charities in New Zealand (LexisNexis, 2013). In 2019, Sue was awarded the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellowship Te Karahipi Rangahau ā Taiao, to undertake research into the question “What does a world-leading framework of charities law look like?”. The final report from the Fellowship, entitled Focus on purpose, was released in April 2022 making 70 recommendations for charities law reform in Aotearoa New Zealand. Daniel McLaughlin, Special Counsel, Dentons
Daniel is a Special Counsel in the Private Wealth team. He specialises in personal asset planning and structuring, and provides domestic and international clients with strategic advice in relation to the organisation and regulation of private wealth. He is an expert in trusts and trusteeship issues, wills, succession and estates, relationship property, and other personal asset planning matters. He advises private clients, family offices, trustees, and financial institutions. He also has experience with New Zealand foreign trusts, AML/CFT and the CRS and FATCA reporting regimes. Daniel's previous experience in tax law means he quickly identifies potential domestic and international tax issues that arise in relation to clients' personal asset planning.


Steven Moe, Partner,Parry Field Lawyers
Steven Moe is a Partner at Parry Field Lawyers with a focus on 'for purpose' organisations ranging from social enterprises to charities, NFPs and religious groups. He has worked as a lawyer for 20 years including 11 years overseas based in Tokyo, London and Sydney and since 2016 has been based in Christchurch. He is a Director of a charitable company and is Chair of Community Finance (impact investing with a social housing focus). He writes on purpose and impact for Spinoff, hosts seeds podcast with 260+ interviews of inspiring people from across Aotearoa and wrote the book “Social Enterprises in New Zealand: A Legal Handbook”.


Nick Bland, Senior Associate, Simpson Grierson
Nick is a senior associate in the tax group. He advises on all aspects of New Zealand's domestic and international tax law, including corporate and personal income tax and withholding taxes, double taxation conventions, GST (New Zealand's value-added tax), and customs duties and tariffs. Nick works closely with the firm's corporate advisory, commercial, banking and finance, local government, and commercial property groups, providing advice to a wide range of clients. This includes input into due diligence exercises, structuring advice, and contractual drafting for business acquisitions, business divestments, and other transactions. It also includes liaising with Inland Revenue on behalf of clients in relation to tax compliance and dispute resolution matters and rulings, and making submissions on tax policy developments. In addition, Nick is an expert in relation to charities and not-for-profit organisations. He provides extensive advice to such organisations, and to corporates and other clients involved with them, in relation to both tax and general matters. He regularly deals with the Charities Commission and Inland Revenue on such matters.
