Part 1: Understanding and Interpreting Financial Statements Including "Red Flags"

Not all financial statements are created equal, Join this workshop to explore why this is before walking through the financial statements contained in a financial report and talk about the key elements.

Throughout the session you will consider:

  • How to read the profit and loss statement and identify red flags
  • How to read a balance sheet
  • Identifying red flags and where to locate critical information

Part 2: Business Valuations for Dispute Purposes

The expert business valuer has provided you with their report and you can see their determined value but what is the remaining content of the report actually saying and how did they get to their value?

Throughout the second part of the workshop you will examine:

  • Processes that a business valuer will follow to arrive at their determination of valuation and discuss in detail
  • The application of the various valuation methodologies that they could have applied
  • The information they should have considered
Part 3: How to Identify Signs of Potential Distress or Insolvency in the Financial Statements

When assessing whether a business is suffering from distress, or at risk of insolvency, there are different approaches and analysis that can be used. This session will highlight how critical it is that management monitors financial performance and the overall health of the business to identify areas of concern. We’ll also discuss the importance of working with key partners / advisors to implement appropriate strategies and ensure debts can be paid as and when they fall due.

Andre has expertise across a range of industries including property, construction, trade, agriculture, wholesale, distribution, retail, hospitality, aged care, and transport. Education & Accreditations include Registered Liquidator; Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association program (ARITA); Institute of Chartered Accountants program (CA); Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Law; Masters of Commerce; Financial Analysis Certificate. Andre is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand.


David Ferrier, Director, Forensic Solutions, CAANZ
David is an experienced forensic accountant and Director of Forensic Solutions Ligation Support. David has prepared many business valuations for a multitude of purposes including shareholder and family law disputes and given oral evidence in relation to these valuations in the Federal, Federal Circuit, Family, Supreme and Land & Environment Courts, business valuations for re-structuring purposes and pre-lending requirements. In addition to business valuations, David is also involved in all aspects of litigation support including economic loss claims, independent determinations, review of other expert reports, preliminary assessments and consulting expert work. David has been a guest presenter on the topic of accounting and valuation for a range of organisations on a range of forensic accounting and valuation matters, including CAANZ, CPA Australia, Legalwise, Leo Cussens and the Law Institute of Victoria.

Kellie is an experienced forensic accountant and Director of Forensic Solutions Ligation Support. Like David, Kellie has prepared business valuations for a multitude of purposes including shareholder and family law disputes for the Federal, Federal Circuit, Family, Supreme Courts and VCAT, and business valuations for re-structuring purposes. In addition to business valuations, Kellie is also involved in all aspects of litigation support including economic loss claims, independent determinations, review of other expert reports, preliminary assessments and consulting expert work. Kellie is a regular guest speaker for a number of Legal Professional Development training organisations such as Legalwise. Kellie has also been a guest speaker at the Family Law Section Bi-Annual Conference Junior Lawyers Program in 2016 and 2018.
