Ms. Samira Taghavi, Barrister, Active Legal Solutions
Samira Taghavi is a criminal defence lawyer who represents defendants nationally. Having originally come to this country from Iran to undertake her Master of Laws degree, she has since contributed to New Zealand's justice system at several levels and has since made significant contributions to the country's justice system. Samira currently serves as a council member of the Law Association as well as a member of criminal law committee and is also a member of the Defence Lawyers Association Committee. In addition to her legal roles, Samira has an extensive background as a lobbyist advocating for the rights of criminal defendants during trials. To support this cause, she has authored numerous opinion pieces for prominent mainstream publications, amplifying the importance of fair treatment and justice in the legal system.


Dr. Amanda Bean, Barrister, Bean Law
After years of scientific research culminating in a PhD in Biomedical Science at the University of Waikato, Amanda embarked on a legal career with the aim of specialising in the use of scientific evidence in criminal trials, including physics, chemistry, and biology. As a result, she has a keen interest in Forensic Science and legal cases involving medical or scientific data. Amanda is a Solicitor and Director at Bean Law in Hamilton and practices alongside a small team of lawyers focusing on Criminal and Family Law.


Mr. Allan Tobeck, Barrister, Allan Tobeck Barrister
Allan Tobeck was Admitted to the Bar in 1999 and has had a strong traffic practice since then. He has appeared for defendants in Courts at all levels on drink driving matters and in Courts from Kaitaia to Invercargill. He regularly appears as defence Counsel for defendants charged with drink driving offences and also assists other defence Counsel doing the same. Whilst currently based in Southland he regularly appears in Courts nationally and maintains a strong interest in drink driving defences.


Mr. Joon Yi, Barrister, Pohutukawa Chambers
Joon is an expert in criminal law, traffic law, tax prosecution and getting clients discharged without conviction. He works in all courts across New Zealand. Joon has over ten years of criminal law experience. Joon has previously worked as a senior prosecutor for the New Zealand Police, prosecutor for the Inland Revenue and as a lawyer at the Public Defence Service. Joon has also worked for Parliamentary Services working with Members of Parliament and has run several businesses and charities. Joon also works as a Tenancy Adjudicator for the Tenancy Tribunal. Joon prides himself in providing clients with the best results possible – whether it be through a jury trial, judge-alone trial, discharges without a conviction or negotiating the charges down. Joon also regularly appears for appeals at the High Court and also at the Court of Appeal. Joon is multi-cultural. He was born in Seoul, grew up on the North Shore and has lived in the CBD, Māngere and west Auckland. Joon has a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Auckland and a Bachelor of Science degree with specialisation in computer science. Joon has also spent time studying at the Seoul National University. Joon was also a prize-winner for Te Reo Māori for three consecutive years during his time at Rangitoto College.
